DOT Physicals Q&A

What are DOT physicals?

DOT physicals refer to medical exams that the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires for individuals who operate certain types of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). The purpose of the DOT physical is to ensure that the driver is physically, mentally, and cognitively qualified to operate a CMV safely.

Drivers must undergo DOT physicals if they operate CMVs that weigh more than 10,000 pounds, transport hazardous materials, or transport more than 15 passengers. Most drivers complete the exam every two years, but some need more frequent physicals depending on their age, health, and other factors.

How are DOT physicals different from routine physicals?

While DOT and routine physicals share many similarities, there are a few key differences. DOT physicals are exclusive to CMV operators. Only a certified medical examiner (CME) can perform them.

These exams also include more testing than a routine physical, as CMVs must maintain a certain level of physical and mental fitness in order to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the road.

DOT physicals don’t replace your annual physical. You should still visit the team for a yearly exam to check in on your health status and make any necessary changes to ensure optimal health and wellness.

What do DOT physicals include?

DOT physicals contain several elements beyond a routine exam. Along with a complete medical history review, vitals check, and physical screening, a DOT physical includes:

  • Vision and hearing screening
  • Urine test
  • Drug and alcohol screening
  • Cardiovascular exam

If you have any underlying conditions or require additional testing, the team may order lab work, imaging scans, or specialist referrals.

Your CME reports your results electronically to the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) once the exam is complete. If you pass the DOT physical, you receive a medical examiner’s certificate (MEC). A valid MEC is essential to operate a CMV, so you must meet the exam’s requirements.

Do DOT physicals require preparation?

Preparing for your DOT physical can help ensure you’re physically and mentally ready for the exam. To prepare for a DOT physical:

  • Bring a valid driver’s license
  • Send over any necessary medical records
  • Gather any required documentation from your employer
  • Be honest about any conditions you have or medications you take
  • Follow any specific instructions from your employer
  • Avoid caffeine and nicotine
  • Be on time

Passing a DOT physical is the first step in beginning a fulfilling career as a commercial driver. To schedule an exam, call Clinica Medica Hispana or schedule an appointment online. Walk-ins are also welcome.
